Personality profiles in elderly patients with chronic orofacial pains
Kim Young-Jun

Abstract
Chronic orofacial pain is defined as chronic pain related to the face or mouth. Most of these pains present complicated
patterns because of the complex regional anatomical structures, various autonomic effects, and difficulties in the diagnosis and the treatment of chronic pain conditions. The longer pain is present, the greater the possibility of significant psychological factors. For the best treatment of chronic orofacial pain, an understanding of this relationship is very important. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is an effective instrument for the assessment of patients with chronic orofacial pains and psychological problems. It can show valuable information about the relationship between chronic pain and emotional distress. It can also be useful in establishing the good dentist-patient relationship and
improving treatment outcomes in the dental management. Elders may be more vulnerable to chronic orofacial pains due to their general health problems, physiological changes, and social environments. Therefore, clinicians should pay more attention to their pain conditions and consider the evaluation of their psychological status as one of the essential processes in the diagnosis and the treatment of chronic orofacial pain.
